Corrugated Gaskets

Corrugated Gaskets

Kaxite corrugated gaskets combine a wave-profile metal core with a soft graphite, ceramic or PTFE facing on both faces. The corrugation handles controlled compression at low-to-medium bolt load; the facing provides the sealing contact on flanges and heads. Diameter is practically unlimited, which is why they are the standard choice for large diameter flue gas ducts and heads. DIN EN 1514-4 standard, SS304/316 and exotic cores available. Free samples from an ISO 9001 Ningbo factory.

Corrugated Gaskets for Flanges and Heads – Graphite, Ceramic or PTFE Soft Facing on a Wave-Profile Core

Kaxite corrugated gaskets combine a wave-profile metal core with a soft facing on both faces — expanded graphite, ceramic or PTFE — so the gasket handles two jobs at once. The corrugation provides controlled compression and recovery at bolt loads too low for a spiral wound or ring joint gasket; the soft facing provides the actual sealing contact with the flange or head. That combination is what makes corrugated gaskets the standard choice for large diameter flue gas ducts, boiler heads and low-pressure high-temperature joints, where the diameter is too large for other gasket families and the bolt load is limited. See the full gaskets range for the other families that share the same flange library.

The three-layer construction, explained in order

Facing
Soft facing — topGraphite for steam and hydrocarbons, ceramic for high-temperature flue gas, PTFE for chemical and low-friction service.
Core
Corrugated metal coreWave profile formed from SS304, SS316, SS321, copper, aluminium, Monel 400 or titanium. Provides compression, recovery and mechanical strength.
Facing
Soft facing — bottomSame facing as the top, so both flange faces seal against a soft layer instead of bare metal.

Choose the facing by media and temperature

Expanded graphite facing

Steam, hydrocarbons, thermal oil, inert gases. General high-temperature service where a soft and chemically inert sealing layer is required.

-200 to +550 °C

Ceramic facing

Boiler flue gas, exhaust ducting, incinerator lines. Where graphite would oxidise and PTFE would decompose.

up to +1000 °C

PTFE facing

Acids, alkalis, solvents and food-grade lines. Low-friction surface where the flange face finish is smooth.

-100 to +260 °C

The facing is applied to both faces of the corrugated core; the core only contacts the flange if the facing is damaged or missing. Send the media and temperature and Kaxite will confirm the facing grade before production.

Core material Typical service Notes
SS304 General purpose, steam, process gas Most common corrugated core
SS316 / SS316L Chloride, coastal, food-grade Higher corrosion resistance
SS321 High-temperature flue gas Stabilised against intergranular corrosion
Copper Steam, thermal Higher thermal conductivity
Aluminium Low-pressure gas, air ducting Lightweight and low cost
Monel 400 Seawater, hydrofluoric acid Nickel-copper alloy
Titanium Chlorine, oxidising media Highly corrosion resistant

Where corrugated gaskets are the right choice — and where they are not

Use corrugated gaskets when…

  • The flange diameter is too large for a spiral wound or ring joint gasket
  • The bolt load is low or medium, not high-pressure
  • The joint runs at high temperature but low pressure (flue gas, exhaust, boiler head)
  • The flange face is flat and wide, and the gasket must follow the shape (oval, rectangular, custom)
  • The media would attack a bare metal face, so a soft facing is required

Use a different gasket when…

Typical applications

Boiler flue gas ducts and air preheaters
Large diameter heads and manhole covers
Exhaust and stack flange connections
Low-pressure steam and thermal oil lines
Rectangular and oval duct transitions
Chemical plant low-pressure lines with PTFE facing

Production and supply

Kaxite Sealing produces corrugated gaskets in Ningbo, Zhejiang, with the corrugation, facing application and final inspection on one site so the facing is not damaged in transit before packing. Standard sizes follow DIN EN 1514-4; ASME B16.20 dimensions and customer drawings are also quoted. Diameter is practically unlimited — the only real constraint is transport and flange access, which is why very large rings are shipped as split segments or in segments with overlap. Free samples are available for qualified projects with the mill certificate attached. Factory visits and video audits are welcome by appointment; ISO 9001 certificate details are available on request.

Frequently asked questions

Why use corrugated gaskets instead of spiral wound gaskets?
Corrugated gaskets are used where the diameter is too large for a spiral wound gasket or the bolt load is too low. A spiral wound gasket needs a narrow raised face and a defined bolt load; a corrugated gasket seats on a wide flat face and the wave profile provides recovery at much lower bolt load. That makes corrugated gaskets the standard choice for boiler flue gas ducts, air preheaters and large diameter heads — services where a spiral wound gasket at that diameter would buckle during handling.
Which facing should I choose — graphite, ceramic or PTFE?
Expanded graphite for steam, hydrocarbons and thermal oil up to about 550 °C. Ceramic for boiler flue gas, exhaust ducting and incinerator lines up to about 1000 °C, where graphite would oxidise. PTFE for acids, alkalis, solvents and food-grade lines up to about 260 °C, where the flange face finish is smooth. The facing is applied to both sides of the corrugated core; the core does not contact the flange if the facing is intact.
Is there really no size limit?
There is no fixed upper diameter set by the corrugation process itself — the limits are transport, flange access and crane capacity on site. Kaxite has produced corrugated gaskets beyond DN 4000 and ships large rings as split segments with overlap so they can be carried through a manway. Send the flange diameter and site access restrictions and Kaxite will propose a segmenting plan.
What standard does the corrugated gasket follow?
Standard supply is to DIN EN 1514-4 for the dimensions and tolerance. ASME B16.20 and customer drawings are also accepted. The core material, facing material, corrugation pitch and facing thickness are all specified in the purchase order, and a dimensional record against the referenced standard travels with each batch.
What documentation ships with each batch?
Each batch ships with the mill certificate for the core metal, a certificate for the facing material, a dimensional inspection record against the referenced standard, and the KXT stencil or tag on the gasket. Factory visits and video audits are welcome by appointment; ISO 9001 certificate details are available on request.
