PTFE Skived Sheet

PTFE Skived Sheet

Kaxite PTFE skived sheet is virgin PTFE sheet turned off a compression-moulded billet on a precision lathe, giving a continuous and dimensionally stable sheet from 0.25 mm to 8 mm thick. Continuous service temperature -200 to +250°C, tensile strength 2,500–4,000 PSI, specific gravity 2.13–2.24. Chemically inert, non-flammable, excellent dielectric strength. Used for PTFE gaskets, electrical insulation, pump and valve seals, chemical tank lining and low-friction wear pads. Free samples from an ISO 9001 Ningbo factory.

PTFE Skived Sheet for Gaskets, Sealing and Electrical Insulation – Virgin PTFE, 0.25 mm to 8 mm

Kaxite PTFE skived sheet is produced by skiving — turning a thin continuous layer off a compression-moulded cylindrical billet on a precision lathe. That process gives a sheet that is uniform in thickness across its full width and stays dimensionally stable when cut into gaskets, insulation pads or lining strips. Skived sheet is chemically inert to almost every industrial medium, non-flammable, and an excellent dielectric, which is why it is used in PTFE gaskets, circuit board insulation, pump and valve seals, chemical tank lining and low-friction wear pads. For the moulded sheet alternative, see the PTFE resin moulded sheet page; for the expanded variant, see the expanded PTFE sheet page.

The skiving process, in four steps

1

Billet compression-moulding

Virgin PTFE powder is pre-formed and sintered into a cylindrical billet. Density and sintering cycle are controlled so the finished sheet has no voids.

2

Lathe mounting

The billet is mounted on a precision lathe and trued on the OD so the cut will be parallel across the full width of the skive.

3

Skiving cut

A sharp tool peels a continuous sheet off the rotating billet. The tool geometry and cutting speed set the thickness — this is what gives skived sheet its uniform gauge.

4

Trim and stress relief

The sheet is trimmed to width, measured for thickness at multiple points, and annealed if the customer requires reduced internal stress for later machining.

Chemical and electrical behaviour, at a glance

Chemically inert Resists acids, alkalis, solvents, oxidisers and hydrocarbons. Exceptions: molten alkali metals and elemental fluorine.
Non-flammable High melting point and autoignition temperature. Low heat release and smoke generation; can sustain short exposure at higher temperature.
Dielectric Excellent electrical insulation for circuit board substrates, terminal pads and high-frequency parts.
Low friction Coefficient of friction among the lowest of any solid material. Used for wear pads, slide bearings and non-stick lining.

Parameter Value Notes
Thickness range 0.25 mm – 8 mm Thinner gauges available on request
Sheet size Up to 1500 × 1500 mm for thin gauges; smaller for thick gauges Dependent on thickness and billet size
Grade Virgin PTFE Reprocessed and filled grades on request
Temperature range -200 to +250 °C continuous Short excursions above 250 °C degrade the sheet
Tensile strength 2,500 – 4,000 PSI ASTM D638 / D4894 equivalent
Specific gravity 2.13 – 2.24 Higher values for filled grades
Dielectric strength ≥ 40 kV/mm Depends on thickness and grade
Colour Natural white Black and other colours on request

Non-standard thicknesses and sheet sizes are quoted from drawings. For thicknesses below 0.25 mm, the skived sheet becomes skived tape and is quoted as a separate line; see the PTFE sheet parent page for the full sheet range.

Skived vs moulded vs expanded PTFE sheet

Skived (this page)

  • Thickness 0.25 – 8 mm
  • Uniform gauge across full width
  • Continuous, dimensionally stable
  • Best for gasket cutting, electrical insulation, lining
  • Higher cost per kg than moulded

Moulded

  • Thickness typically 1 – 50 mm
  • Pressed in a die to near-final dimensions
  • Thicker blocks available
  • Best for thick sheet, large blocks and machined parts
  • Thickness variation higher than skived

Expanded

  • Thickness typically 0.5 – 3 mm
  • Soft, compressible, multidirectional strength
  • Best for compressible gaskets on irregular flanges
  • Lower tensile strength than skived
  • Not suitable for high bolt load

The three are often quoted together on one purchase order because they serve different parts of the same plant. Kaxite stocks all three; the modified PTFE sheet variant is also available when weldability or reduced creep is required.

Production, tolerances and documentation

Kaxite Sealing skives PTFE sheet in Ningbo, Zhejiang, with billet compression-moulding, lathe skiving, thickness inspection and final packing on one site, so the thickness is verified before the sheet is cut to size. Thickness tolerance is ±10% of nominal for gauges up to 3 mm and ±0.15 mm for gauges above 3 mm unless a tighter tolerance is specified on the purchase order. Global tolerance standards on skived tapes, sheets and films are achievable — send the drawing and the tolerance class and Kaxite will confirm before production. Free samples are available for qualified projects with the material certificate attached. Factory visits and video audits are welcome by appointment; ISO 9001 certificate details are available on request.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between skived PTFE sheet and moulded PTFE sheet?
Skived PTFE sheet is turned off a cylindrical billet on a lathe, which gives a continuous sheet with uniform thickness across the full width and a thickness range of 0.25 mm to 8 mm. Moulded PTFE sheet is pressed in a die, which allows thicker blocks (typically 1–50 mm) but with a higher thickness variation across the plate. Gasket cutting, electrical insulation and lining usually prefer skived; thick blocks and machined parts usually prefer moulded.
What temperature can PTFE skived sheet withstand?
Continuous service from -200 °C to +250 °C. Short excursions above 250 °C can be tolerated, but the sheet will degrade with prolonged exposure above that ceiling. The tensile strength remains in the 2,500–4,000 PSI range across the full service window.
Is PTFE skived sheet chemically inert?
Yes — it resists acids, alkalis, solvents, oxidisers and hydrocarbons, and is used in chemical tank lining and gasket service where other polymers degrade. The two exceptions are molten alkali metals (sodium, potassium) and elemental fluorine, both of which attack PTFE at elevated temperature. Send the media list and Kaxite will confirm compatibility.
What is the difference between Virgin and reprocessed PTFE?
Virgin PTFE is made from new PTFE resin and has the highest chemical resistance, dielectric strength and tensile strength. Reprocessed PTFE is made from reground PTFE scrap; it is cheaper but its dielectric and tensile properties are lower and it is not used for food-grade, pharmaceutical or electrical insulation service. Kaxite supplies Virgin grade as standard and reprocessed grade only on request.
What documentation ships with each sheet?
Each sheet ships with the material certificate (grade, specific gravity, tensile strength), a thickness inspection record at multiple points across the sheet, and the KXT batch mark on the edge. Factory visits and video audits are welcome by appointment; ISO 9001 certificate details are available on request.
